Chapter Seventeen - Hope

Hope took in a shaky breath, allowing some of her fears to release from her body along with the next exhale. The gunfire had stopped. She was all right. Blake was all right. The wagons and stagecoaches were intact, along with their cargo of precious metals. Rabid had been caught. Some of his men were at large, and some lay injured around them. There were some casualties on the town’s side, and she prayed to God none of the injuries were fatal.

In hindsight, she was foolish to think she could sneak out and protect Blake, but in her heart, she would do it again. Looking over to him, she reached her hands up to Blake’s chest, intending to explain to him how she’d been captured by Johnson in the first place. She opened her mouth to speak, but froze. Something warm and sticky pressed against her palms.

Hope stifled the scream and the bile that both threatened to fly from her throat when she saw it. Blake had been shot in the chest. There was no denying it. The dark blood soaked through his shirt when he sat up. “Blake,” she stammered. Her lips were numb. She could barely think. “You’ve been shot. I have to get a doctor.”

At the same time she said the words, it occurred to her they made no sense. They were miles outside of town, and over a dozen men lay injured. Even if there was a doctor to be found among the able-bodied, uninjured men, they would be overwhelmed. Plus a man shot in the chest couldn’t have more than minutes to live. Regardless of these facts, she began to get to her feet.

Blake halted her with a hand on her wrist. “No. It’s all right. Get one of my brothers to take you to town.”

She shook her head, ready to find help. “Don’t talk like that. There’s still time, Blake. Wait here.”

“No. There’s no time for a doctor. Get my brothers. Go back to town. I’ll be along later.” Blake slumped back, resting almost flat on his back.

Tears stung her eyes like fire. She opened her mouth to say something, but only a gurgled, incoherent sound came out. He was protecting her from witnessing his passing. Hope was not going to let him die. She couldn’t lose him this soon. “I can’t leave you, Blake. Please don’t die.”

Giving her a weak smile, he labored to speak. “If you stay here any longer, you’ll learn something about me…something you might as well know now.”

She crouched down closer to look at his rugged, handsome face. “What do you mean?”

“I’m not like other men. I’m something else…something more than what I was when I was born.”

Confused, she whispered, “I don’t understand.”

“I’m a bear shifter,” he said. Through the dim moonlight, his pristine blue eyes stared up at her, an unreadable expression deep in them. “A bear shifter.” He hesitated, perhaps from physical pain but also from what seemed to be the difficulty of something else as well.
